What makes Upton Grange special?

Family-run Dorset holiday cottages

You could say that we’re on permanent holiday here at Upton Grange. We live in one of the historic farm buildings that have been converted into self-catering cottages. We eat and drink the same local produce as our guests. And we get to enjoy the wonderful Dorset scenery all year round (and in all weathers).

Our family has been welcoming visitors to our home, Upton Grange, for years. Yes, it can be hard work at times, particularly at the end of summer when everyone seems to leave on the same day. So much washing and cleaning to be done at once! But we love it, and we wouldn’t want to be doing anything else.

Farmers, smugglers, the RAF and tourists

When you take a holiday break here, you’re just the latest in a string of characters to enjoy the hospitality of Upton Grange. The first were medieval farmers, going back to the Domesday Book of 1086 – almost a thousand years ago.

Being so close to the sea, some of these farmers couldn’t resist the richer harvest that came from smuggling. The local coastline was ideal for landing contraband and Excise men were regular visitors to the Grange, in search of illegal goods.

The Royal Air Force set up a radar station here in the Second World War. They liked it so much they stayed until 1974.

Many of the Grange buildings fell into disrepair. Fortunately, the historic farm was saved through being converted to holiday homes in the 1980s.

We’re an award-winning holiday venue

Our guests aren’t the only ones to appreciate the charms of Upton Grange. Visit England Tourism regularly inspects our self-catering cottages and assesses our customer service.
